 Spring 2008

EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed, is an upcoming feature film in which host Ben Stein (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) goes on a quest to expose the suppression by science's anti-theist elite, and unveil new scientific facts that may suggest evidence of intelligent design in the universe.

This film is set to be in theatres the spring of 2008. It explores the controversy surrounding many scientists, professors and teachers who are losing their jobs for simply questioning the truth of Darwinian evolution.

Discipleship Bible Study in Sunday School

A few weeks ago I saw a marquee at a church in Ponca City with the observation: "Some drink from the fountain of the knowledge of God; others just gargle." The study of the Bible in a weekly Sunday School Bible study group has been a great opportunity to know God and what He has to say to us. Baptist churches for decades have found this to be a key to their church life and evangelism. We at Olivet have a wonderful heritage of Sunday School Bible Study. I hope that you will join me in a commitment to "Discipleship Bible Study in Sunday School."

We have begun meeting together, as Sunday School teachers and workers and those interested in teaching, on Wednesday evenings between Power Time and Choir for those that can come then. During the OPEN Services Sunday evenings, June 25 and July 2, I will be preaching on "How We Got Our Bible" and "How We Know the Bible is God’s Word." As a part of our "Discipleship Bible Study in Sunday School" we will also be meeting on Sunday evenings at 7 pm beginning June 25 in the Nicholson Chapel. We will be discussing our Sunday School and tools for Bible Study. In understanding Bible Study, I am hoping to cover how the Bible came to be written - its original languages, inspiration, canons, manuscripts, and various translations by examining such questions, as - How do we know what the Bible really says? Why are these particular 66 books in the Bible? Why are there so many translations? How can we evaluate translations? Which translation is best? What about Study Bibles, concordances, Bible dictionaries, Bible handbooks, commentaries, etc.?

Over the years of ministry I have discovered that the greatest challenge that you will find, as a Christian, is choosing between something which you find the Bible teaches and something which experience in life teaches. (Such life-experience may be a matter of what seems logical in your mind or emotionally right in your heart.) It is always a comfort, when what the Bible teaches and what life teaches are the same. However, when they are different, that is, when it comes to a matter of what you find in the Bible versus what you find in life, the choice is simple: Choose the Bible, after carefully reading and interpreting and seeing what the Bible really does say. In the abstract, a sincere believer would always choose to go with the Bible; however, in actual, real-life situations it is quite different. There is a temptation always to choose what life-experience teaches and then to twist what the Bible says to fit this. Bro. Steve noted this in a recent message where Peter describes this in 2 Peter 3:16. Some people put the Bible on a "torture rack" and pull its ideas all "out-of-joint" making it say what they want it to say and not what God intended for us to "hear" and understand from the Bible. It is painful to watch, as these people mistranslate and misinterpret the Bible to their own immoral, perverse ends. This is why it is so important both to know about our Bible and to know our Bible - its origin and content. This is Discipleship Bible Study in both our daily quiet time of Bible reading and study, as well as our Sunday School Bible Study. Join me, as we seek to develop our understanding of the Bible better. Let us pray together for one another, as we grow.

Bro. Larry
